CROHN'S DISEASE
He has contended with Crohn's disease, a condition that causes inflammation in the digestive system, throughout his career. The disease first affected him at age 17 during junior national team tryouts and caused him to miss about three years of competition. He has been able to manage the condition through medication. "I was in a life-or-death situation in 2007 and I was just in and out of hospital for three years and hockey was just never a part of the picture. I would never have thought I would be part of the national hockey team at that point. It was just the love of the game that brought me back. I couldn't have quit."
