General
Four-time Olympic gold medallists the United States of America secured their place at the 2020 Games in Tokyo by winning the 2020 CONCACAF Olympic Qualifying Championship.

The US team have competed at all six editions of the Olympic Games in which football has been part of the programme, and are the most successful nation in the women's competition. They advanced to the gold medal match at each Olympic Games between 1996 and 2012, claiming four gold medals and one silver medal [in 2000] during that period. Their run of successive finals ended at the 2016 Games in Rio de Janeiro, where they topped their group with two wins and a draw, before losing to Sweden on penalties in the quarterfinals. The only side to have beaten the US team at the Olympic Games without needing penalties is Norway, who were victorious in the final at the 2000 Games in Sydney and also secured a win during the group stage in 2008 in Beijing.

The United States of America have won four titles at the Women's World Cup, which is more than any other nation. The US team have reached the semifinals at every edition of the tournament, winning the third-place playoff on the three occasions they did not advance to the final. The only final they have lost was in Germany in 2011, where they were beaten by Japan in a penalty shootout. Their most recent success was in 2019, where they topped their group with three wins. They then defeated Spain, France, and England in the knockout stages, and prevailed against the Netherlands in the final with a 2-0 win.
