General Interest

General
Canada booked their place in Tokyo by winning all three group matches against Japan, Sweden and hosts Belgium at the 2020 Olympic Qualifying Tournament in Ostend.

In six previous Olympic appearances Canada are yet to win a medal. Their best result remains a fourth-place finish at the 1984 Games in Los Angeles, where they lost the bronze medal match to the People's Republic of China. At the 2016 Games in Rio, they posted three group wins against the People's Republic of China, Serbia and Senegal, followed by defeats to the United States of America and Spain. It was enough to make the quarterfinals, where they failed to convert a five-point half-time lead over France and eventually lost 68-63 to finish the Games ranked seventh overall.

At the World Cup the Canadians' best results are a brace of bronze medals in 1979 and 1986, and they have not stood on the podium since. In 2018 they topped their group with wins over Greece, the Republic of Korea and France, before exiting at the quarterfinal stage to Spain and finishing the tournament ranked seventh overall.

At continental level Canada have won three AmeriCup titles. They won back-to-back gold medals in 2015 and 2017, silver in 2013 and bronze in both 2009 and 2011, during a time in which the United States of America did not compete at the tournament. In 2019, when the US team returned for their first AmeriCup since 2007, Canada met them in the final and lost by 21 points. It was Canada's first defeat after an unbeaten run of 17 AmeriCup matches dating back to the 2013 final they lost against Cuba.

Canada ranked fourth at the 2021 AmeriCup in Puerto Rico, losing to Brazil in the third-place play-off after the hosts knocked them out at the semifinal stage. At the Pan American Games the Canadians won gold for the first time in 2015, defeating their US neighbours in the final on home soil in Toronto.
