General Interest

General
The Islamic Republic of Iran qualified for the 2020 Olympic Games through their performance at the 2019 World Cup, where they were the highest-placed Asian nation. The team are making their third Olympic appearance in Tokyo, having competed most recently at the 2008 Games. The Iranians were placed in Group A in Beijing but failed to win any of their five matches. Their only other Olympic campaign came back in 1948 where they finished 14th.

The Iranian team have competed at the last three editions of the World Cup, but are yet to reach the knockout stages. Their highest final ranking of 19th came on their debut at the competition in 2010, when the tournament was still known as the world championships.

At continental level, the Islamic Republic of Iran have finished on the podium at five out of the last six editions of the Asia Cup. Their recent record includes three titles, which they secured in 2007, 2009 and 2013. The team have also won medals at the four most recent Asian Games, although they are yet to claim gold. They won bronze in 2006 and 2010, and were beaten in the final by the Republic of Korea and the People's Republic of China in 2014 and 2018, respectively.
