He was initially drawn to the sport because of his height. "I am very fond of football and everyone loved football in Ahvaz, where I was born. As a kid I was a goalkeeper, but I wanted to be a goal scorer. My school teacher selected me for the basketball team because of my height. I did not know what basketball was and I wrote 'goalkeeper' in the position option. For the first six months, I played basketball with men's shoes or barefoot. I always had a size problem as a child." (varzesh3.com, 10 Mar 2018; NOC, 06 Aug 2007)

NBA EXPERIENCE
He played in the NBA between 2008 and 2013. He competed for the Memphis Grizzlies for four seasons before representing the Phoenix Suns and the Toronto Raptors. "Playing in the NBA was my childhood dream. I used to wake up at 06:00 in the morning to watch NBA games. The day my coach told me that I had received a three-year offer from Memphis, I could not believe it. I thought I was dreaming. The first year I was in the United States, I was confused and could not believe that I was playing against the superstars I saw on TV. Now [speaking in 2018] that I think about it, I wish I had tried harder to play more." (irna.ir, 22 Oct 2019; varzesh3.com, 10 Mar 2018; nba.com, 30 Apr 2013)

TV ROLE
He played the part of Yahya ibn Zamzam in the Iranian history television series 'Mokhtarnameh'. "I was 17 years old when I appeared in the show. I wanted to become famous by playing a role in 'Mokhtarnameh', but it was released late [in 2010]. In general, I was deceived to play in it because I was told that I would get to kill Mukhtar [the main character], but this was not the case." (mehrnews.com, 18 Sep 2020)
