His mother is from the United States of America, while his father was born in the Islamic Republic of Iran and moved to Chicago, IL, United States of America, in the late 1970s. "I feel extremely proud to be an Iranian-American. I understand Iran is a great country and the people are very proud. I see it when I watch the Iranian soccer team compete in the World Cup, the wrestling team in the Olympics and the basketball team in the World Cup. REPRESENTING IRAN
He began playing for the Islamic Republic of Iran in 2019, and was part of the team that secured qualification for the 2020 Olympic Games through their performance at the 2019 World Cup in the People's Republic of China. "My father travelled to Iran in 2017 at his own expense to meet with the Islamic Republic of Iran Basketball Federation [IRIBF] officials. I had to go to Washington at my own expense to take care of my passport and identity card, and those were situations that we went through without any financial support from the IRIBF. I never asked for money to play for the Iranian national team. To play for this jersey is an absolute honour. World Cup, Olympics, this is a dream come true for me. Let's keep this thing going."
