Spain qualified for the 2020 Olympic Games by winning the 2019 World Cup in the People's Republic of China. The Spanish team have finished on the podium at the last three editions of the Games, but have been beaten by the United States of America in the knockout stages at all three tournaments. Five years ago in Rio de Janeiro, they lost in the semifinals to the US before going on to defeat Australia by a single point in the bronze medal match. Spain faced the US team in the finals of both the 2008 and 2012 Games, but lost both times. They went down 118-107 in the gold medal match in Beijing, and 107-100 in London.

Spain's victory at the 2019 World Cup was their second title in the competition. They went undefeated through two group stages to reach the knockout rounds, before beating Poland and Australia to set up a final against Argentina. The Spanish team won each quarter to secure a 95-75 victory on the final whistle. They were also triumphant at the 2006 edition of the tournament.

The Spanish team have finished in the top three at eight of the nine editions of the European championships since the turn of the century. They have won three titles during this period [2009, 2011, 2015], and placed third at their most recent appearance in 2017.
