General Interest

General
Argentina are the only team other than the United States of America to have won gold at the Olympic Games since 1992. They triumphed at the 2004 Games in Athens, placing third in their qualification group before beating Greece in the last eight and then defeating the US team 89-81 in the semifinals. Argentina secured gold with an 84-69 win over Italy, with Luis Scola registering 25 points in the final.

The team claimed bronze at the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing, and then missed out on a medal four years later in London after losing 81-77 to the Russian Federation in the bronze medal match. They were one of four teams to win three and lose two of their matches in Group B at the 2016 Games in Rio de Janeiro. Although this was enough to qualify for the knockout stages, they were beaten by 27 points by the United States of America in the quarterfinals.

Argentina were silver medallists at the 2019 World Cup, where they went unbeaten through two group stages to reach the knockout rounds. They secured a place in the final with victories over Serbia and France before suffering a 95-75 defeat to Spain in the gold medal match. Their 2019 World Cup performance secured their qualification for Tokyo 2020. Argentina's sole world title came in 1950, when the tournament was still known as the world championships, while they were also runners-up in 2002.

Other notable results achieved by the team in recent years include a gold medal at the 2019 Pan American Games in Lima, Peru, as well as a second-place finish at the 2017 AmeriCup.
