Trinidad and Tobago made their Olympic debut in 1984 and recorded their best finish at the Games in 2016, placing fifth in Rio to end a run of three frustrating failures to finish at previous Games. At both the 2004 and 2008 Games they failed to complete their heat, while they failed to finish the final at the 2012 Games in London.

At the world championships, Trinidad and Tobago have claimed a single medal, a bronze in 2015 behind winners Jamaica and the United States of America. The team made their sixth world championship appearance in 2019 in Doha, where they placed sixth in the final.
