General Interest

General
The Canadian men's 4x100m relay team has a long history of Olympic participation, with 17 appearances dating back to the 1912 Games. Tokyo will be their 10th consecutive appearance since the 1984 Games in Los Angeles, where they won their first Olympic medal in the event - a bronze behind runners up Jamaica and winners the United States of America.

Canada claimed gold in the event at the 1996 Games in Atlanta, upsetting the host nation who finished runners up 0.36s behind the victorious Canadians. They failed to make the final at the next two editions, however, before bouncing back to make the final in Beijing in 2008 where they finished sixth on the night. Canada were later upgraded to fifth in Beijing after Jamaica's disqualification for an anti-doping violation in 2017. Canada were disqualified from the final at London in 2012 for a lane infringement, before returning to the podium at the 2016 Games in Rio de Janeiro with a bronze medal behind runners-up Japan and winners Jamaica.

At the world championships, Canada have claimed two titles, posting back-to-back wins in 1995 and 1997, along with back-to-back bronze medals in 2013 and 2015. At the most recent edition in 2019, however, they failed to make the final despite running the eighth fastest time in the heats, ahead of the ninth-fastest US team who would go on to win gold in the final. Because the US team were third in their heat they qualified for the final while Canada, who were sixth in their heat, missed out by five thousandths of a second to the Dutch team.
