As a high school student in Jamaica his preferred sport was cricket, but he also competed in long jump, high jump, and 400m hurdles. He switched to sprinting in 2013 after moving to Canada when Pat Sima-Ledding, head coach at Okanagan Athletics Club in Kelowna, spotted him running on a track.
