In 2019 he said he was focusing more on the last 50 metres of each race in training, after coming fourth in the 200m final at the 2018 Diamond League meet in Zurich, Switzerland. "[I began to] eat, sleep and dream that last 50. [This] is going to take me to that next step to go even [lower] than [the] 19.90 that I feel I need to get on the podium at the [2020] Olympics. Last year [2018], my coach said I was consciously anticipating getting tired at the same spot in a race and that translated into me getting mentally tired because fatigue starts in your brain first before it hits your body." "Every day, when I'm lining up at practice with some of the fastest guys in the world, I'm saying, 'Look how far you've come. Why can't you be even better?' Because when I hang it up and I'm done, I want to look back and say, 'I maximised my potential, and I truly achieved everything out of the sport that I knew I could have'." General Interest

General
CANADIAN TEAM RIVALRIES
He has a healthy rivalry with other Canadian sprinters such as Andre De Grasse, Brendon Rodney, Gavin Smellie, Jerome Blake, and Bismark Boateng, who often compete on the 4x100m relay team together. He particularly enjoys running against Andre De Grasse, who he beat in the 100m at the 2019 Canadian Championships. "I'd be lying if I said that beating him [De Grasse] wasn't something that I was not chasing. I knew in order to achieve where I wanted to go, that beating him was part of the equation. I want to prove I'm a contender on the world stage. I know he is, he's already proved it with his medals. I know I'm capable of it, so that's my next aim. We [Canadian male athletes] try to push each other to be the best. On the start line, when I see another Canadian in the race, I'm in that mindset of wanting to be the top Canadian and I'm more motivated to be at my best because I know they will be at their best. [We're] fierce competitors on the track but once the races are over, we're back to being good friends." (CBC Sports YouTube channel, 15 Jan 2020; athletics.ca, 20 Sep 2019; coastmountainnews.com, 27 Jul 2019)

DISQUALIFICATION DEMONS
He was tipped as a medal contender in the 200m at the 2017 World Championships in London, England, but was disqualified for a lane violation during his heat, which he ran in what would have been a season best time of 20.08 seconds. "[When I saw the DQ] my heart sank. I went numb. I couldn't even speak. For me that pain that I felt, that darkness - it doesn't leave me. That's what's been fuelling me every day. I know there were some medals that were there for the taking, and I didn't take advantage of it. So every day when I'm lining up, I'm thinking I have to be meticulous, I have to practise and not make the mistakes that I did last time. You learn to hate losing more than you love winning. The best motivator is to not want to lose again, to not want to feel that pain and go to that dark spot again." (CBC Sports YouTube channel, 15 Jan 2020; runningmagazine.ca, 07 Aug 2017)
