He ran his first 100m race in 2012 at the York Region High School Championships in Toronto, ON, Canada, having previously focused only on basketball. (andredegrasse.com, 01 Nov 2019)

He was convinced by a friend to give sprinting a try after his high school was unable to field a basketball team in his senior year. He borrowed a pair of spikes for the race and came second, running a 10.9s without starting blocks. He changed coach in 2018, leaving Stuart McMillan and Canada behind to work with Rana Reider and his group at the University of North Florida in the United States of America. "[McMillan and I] had a great run. The first couple of years were great, 2016 and even the first half of 2017 was good, until the [hamstring] injury. Every coach is different. I am not trying to bash Stu or say anything negative about what I do with Rana that I didn't do with Stu. But everyone has their own philosophy and I just buy in and stick with what the coach wants me to do and go from there. Rana has done a great job with all different types of athletes."
