General Interest

General
Japan won their only Olympic medal in the women's team all-around event at Tokyo 1964, where they claimed bronze. They narrowly missed out on the podium at the 2016 Games in Rio de Janeiro, finishing 1.632 points behind the People's Republic of China in bronze. It was Japan's highest-placed finish at the Olympic Games since 1968, when they also ranked fourth.

The Japanese team qualified for Tokyo 2020 via the 2019 World Championships in Stuttgart, where they placed 11th. They won bronze at the world championships in 1962 and 1966, while their best result in recent years is fifth-place finishes in 2010 and 2015.

Japan won bronze at the 2018 Asian Games in Indonesia. Although a title has eluded them at the Games, they have won 11 medals [four silver, seven bronze] in 11 appearances at the Games since 1974. They won the title at the Asian championships in 2008 and 2015, and claimed silver at the most recent edition of the tournament in 2019.
