Her father Yoshiaki Hatakeda was part of the Japanese men's team that won bronze in the team all-around at the 1992 Olympic Games in Barcelona. He has also worked as head coach of the men's team at the Nippon Sport Science University in Japan. Her mother Yukiko represented Japan in artistic gymnastics at the World University Games, while her younger sister Chiaki has also competed in the sport at world junior level. She was influenced by her parents. She had played on a trampoline from a young age but was not interested in artistic gymnastics. Then she was inspired by Japanese manga artist Fujio K Fujiko's lecture about life. "When I was thinking about what I would like to dedicate my life to, I realised that I didn't have anything except artistic gymnastics. Therefore, I decided to concentrate on it."
