One of two nations to win multiple Olympic Winter Games gold medals, Republic of Korea won the inaugural contest in Albertville 1992, edging Canada by 0.04 seconds. After failing to qualify for Lillehammer 1994, they returned in Nagano 1998, finishing second behind Canada after falling with 750m to go. Disqualified in the semi-finals in Salt Lake City 2002, they won gold in an Olympic record time in Torino 2006.
With four laps remaining in the semi-final in Sochi 2014, Lee Ho-Sul's hand collided with the skate of Eddy Alvarez (USA), causing both skaters to crash. The US team were reinstated, but the Koreans were forced to skate in the B Final for the first time. A fall half-way through the final at PyeongChang 2018, eliminated any chance of winning a medal in front of their home crowd.
Nine World Championship gold medals, sitting second behind Canada (13). Won six titles during the 2000’s, but didn’t top the podium again until 2018, going back-to-back in 2019.
Sits second, behind Canada, with six overall World Cup titles, last winning in 2013. With only one podium finish during the 2018/19 season, they finished 2019/20 second overall, starting the season with three consecutive second place finishes and a victory in Dresden in February 2020.
Won a medal at all seven contests at the Asian Winter Games, topping the podium five times. Last winning gold in 2011, the Korean’s would finish nearly a second behind the People’s Republic of China, winning silver in 2017.
