Donated KRW 5 million of his competition winnings to the Korean Red Cross to help the fight against COVID-19. (starinnews.com, 5 Sept 2021)

YOUTUBE SENSATION
Has operated his YouTube channel since 2019, featuring short track competition analysis, techniques and training methods. When there are no competitions, he uploads between two and three videos a week. He wants to build the profile of short track as well as change athlete preconceptions of what they can be involved in. "Short track is both popular and unpopular. At the Winter Olympics every four years it gets a lot of attention, but it doesn't normally. I started the channel with the hope it would become as popular as football." (joongang.co.kr, 27 May 2021)

DANCING KING
Caught the world's attention at the Vancouver 2010 Olympic Winter Games when he danced to Abracadabra by the Brown Eyed Girls at the victory ceremony of the men's relay. (huffingtonpost.kr, 18 Jun 2018)

SUSPENSION
Banned from competition for three years in May 2010 by the Korea Skating Union as a result of his involvement in rigging the outcome of short track races, along with national teammate Lee Jung-Su. The pair later had their suspensions reduced to six months on appeal, but Kwak's coach Jeon Jae-Mok (KOR) received a life ban.
