OLYMPIC WINTER GAMES
Has competed at 24 of 25 Olympic ice hockey tournaments, only missing the St. Mortiz 1928 Olympic Winter Games. The nation has won 11 medals during that time, including winning silver in their first three appearances, before adding another two silver medals in the 1950s.
The United States has won two gold medals (both on home ice), at Squaw Valley 1960 and Lake Placid 1980. Both considered upsets, the 1980 victory has gone down in history, dubbed the "Miracle on Ice", when a team of college players defeated the four-time defending Olympic champion Soviet Union 4-3, as Mike Eruzione (USA) scored the winner with 10 minutes remaining.
Contesting the gold medal match on home ice in 2002 (Salt Lake City), the US team lost 5-2 to rivals Canada in a four-point display from Joe Sakic (CAN). The two rivals faced off again eight years later (Vancouver 2010), with Sidney Crosby (CAN) netting the winner for the hosts with 2:20 remaining in overtime.
Finished seventh at PyeongChang 2018 after being eliminated by the Czech Republic in a shootout during the quarterfinals. Goaltender Pavel Francouz (CZE) saved all five shots, as Petr Koukal (CZE) was the only one to score against Ryan Zapolski (USA).
Team USA will feature five teenagers in Beijing with Jake Sanderson, Matty Beniers, Brock Faber, Matthew Knies, and Drew Commesso. This will be equal to the most teenagers for the USA in Olympic ice hockey, as the 1984 team also had five teenagers.
WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS
Competing at the World Championships since its inception at the Antwerp 1920 Olympic Games, the United States secured a medal in their first seven appearances, including winning gold in 1933. Their only other victory came in 1960, as they won gold at the Squaw Valley Olympic tournament.
They have contested the bronze medal game eight times since 2001, winning the match five times, including four since 2013 when they defeated Finland in a shootout. Won bronze again in 2021, defeating Germany 6-1 as six different players got on the scoreboard. The team went into the playoffs seeded first overall, and after a 6-1 win over Slovakia, they succumbed 4-2 to Canada in the semi-finals.
