General Interest

OLYMPIC WINTER GAMES
Competed at 22 Olympic ice hockey tournaments since their debut at Antwerp 1920. They have won two gold medals (Lillehammer 1994, Torino 2006), three silver medals (1928, 1964, 2014) and four bronze medals (1952, 1980, 1984, 1988).

Going into PyeongChang 2018 as the top-ranked team, Sweden finished fifth after losing to Germany 4-3 in overtime in the quarterfinals. Conceding two goals in the first period, the Swedes cut the deficit in the third period with their opening score, before Germany extended their lead two minutes later. A slashing penalty the following minute resulted in a powerplay goal to Patrik Hersley (SWE) before Mikael Wikstrand (SWE) equalised two minutes later. Patrick Reimer (GER) went on to score the winner 1:30 into extra time.

WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS
Contested the World Championships gold medal match on 28 occasions, winning gold 11 times from 1953 to 2018, including back-to-back titles in 1991-92 and 2017-18, with the latter two won in shootouts against Canada and Switzerland.

At the 2021 World Championships in Riga, they suffered upset losses to Denmark and Belarus in the preliminary round and did not qualify for the quarterfinals for the first and only time since 2000, when the format was introduced. Their ninth-place finish was the lowest in their 69 appearances at the tournament, dating back to 1920.

QUALIFICATION
Qualified for Beijing 2022 after finishing fourth in qualification seeding following the 2019 World Championships in Slovakia.
