Team Walstad

General Interest

Norwegian men have won every medal colour at the Olympic Winter Games, and third Torger Nergaard has two of them – gold from Salt Lake City 2002 (as alternate) and silver from Vancouver 2010. The legendary Eigil Ramsfjell, Nergaard’s hero, captured bronze at Nagano 1998.

However, recent Olympic men’s history has been difficult. The 1998 to 2010 period delivered 28 wins against 12 losses, but the past two Olympiads have seen Norway struggle with a combined 9-10 record.

At World Championships, Norway has won four gold medals plus five silver and nine bronze. Five of those, including gold in 2014, came from Nergaard’s infamous “Crazy Pants” team skipped by Thomas Ulsrud between 2008 and 2016, when the team disbanded.

European Championship results are even stronger, with 28 medals won – five gold, 12 silver and 11 bronze – since their debut appearance in 1975.

Under skip Steffen Walstad, Norway is 26-38 in head-to-head matchups against the field in Beijing. This includes a 9-5 record against Italy, 4-9 versus Great Britain, 0-3 against Canada and 2-0 versus the United States. After losing their first three matches against Sweden, they have had a 4-4 record since, including a 9-8 victory at the 2021 World Championship.

A 4-11 record against Switzerland is tempered by a 2-3 mark in five matches this season, which has been busy. The Norwegians’ total won/loss record is 41-18 including wins at the Olympic Qualification Event at Leeuwarden, which qualified them in eighth position for Beijing 2022.

Team alternate, Magnus Nedregotten, will compete in the mixed doubles with Kristin Skaslien.

World Ranking: 7th (39.161 pts)
