His younger brother started before him at Oppdal Curlingklubb and played with Markus Hoiberg (NOR). At age 12 his father pulled him from an early, solitary, “film geek” lifestyle and pushed him to try the sports his brothers were involved in. “Curling seemed to work the best.” (Athlete, 2 Jan 2022)

“I like all the technicalities and all the co-operation of team play. It’s a really nice combination, a really good mix of a lot of things.” (Athlete, 2 Jan 2022)

“If we have our perfect week in Beijing we might be able to win those medals, but I think statistically those odds decline every year.” (Athlete, 2 Jan 2022)

Winning gold at the 2015 World Mixed Championship in Bern, followed by making their first Grand Slam of Curling final in 2015 (Regina), losing to Brad Gushue (CAN). "Both were really good weeks. It was just instinct, everything was flowing, everything was just magic.” (Athlete, 2 Jan 2022)

“I think I tend to have an OCD, a repetitive thing like a lot of curlers or sports people in general. It’s the opposite now from juniors, now I try to not allow myself to do that.” (Athlete, 2 Jan 2022)

:

“It’s probably something process-based. When I play with Magnus (Nedregotten) or Markus (Hoiberg) they are very technically minded and gifted. I’m more feel-based. I’ve had games where I was technically flawless but if I’m not feeling it, I play like s**t.” (Athlete, 2 Jan 2022)

General Interest

DISASTER
Considers his 2019/20 season with Thomas Ulsrud, Hoiberg and Vaagberg a disaster. “Everyone was convinced these were the best four players Norway has ever put together, and it was probably the worst season a Norwegian team has ever had. We went from being ranked 11th in the world to being ranked 45th.” Following that season, Walstad quit the team and was replaced by Nergaard. When Ulsrud stepped away at the start of the season, Walstad was asked to replace him, and the rest is history. (Athlete, 2 Jan 2022)

FJORD PHOTO
He was the photographer for Nedregotten and Skaslien’s appearance in the 2022 Curling Cares Fundraising Calendar, from which the athletes are directing profits to Amnesty International. The photoshoot took place on the shores of a fjord at dusk. (curlingcares.com, Oct 2021)

WORK ACHIEVEMENT
Placed 28th at the 2021 Global Sabre Awards, which celebrate the world’s best public relations work. His Ubisoft campaign was one of over 5,000 global campaigns judged.
