General Interest

DELAYED MEDAL
After losing to Olympic Athletes from Russia (OAR) in the bronze medal match at the PyeongChang 2018 Olympic Winter Games, the OAR team was later disqualified for doping and Norway was awarded bronze. The pair flew to the Republic of Korea to participate in a medal ceremony. “They’ve robbed us of our moment of glory, (of) receiving our medal in the stadium. That’s not cool. That’s hard to accept, feeling that you’ve been kept out of the light.” (espn.com, 20 Feb 2018)

MARRIED IN CURLING
Norwegians watched the married pair argue on the ice at the PyeongChang 2018 Olympic Winter Games, with the occasionally heated conversation captured on the athlete microphones. Later Norwegian media published the story. “Kristin would come to me in the middle of the Olympics and say, ‘Do you see what they wrote about us?’ I said, ‘Is that so dangerous, then?’ Kristin is very happy to follow the media. Well, really me too, but I pretend to be in control.”

During major competitions, the couple sometimes has separate rooms. “It’s to get some break from each other. I might want to build Lego or play Playstation, while Kristin will do other things. And then she goes to bed so late.” (Athlete, aftenposten.no, 13 Jan 2022)

GROWING THE GAME
“With my background in studying sport at the national level, I think there’s a national culture that can be renewed somehow, see things through younger eyes. It would be interesting to be involved more politically, maybe even be in Paal’s shoes as a Secretary-General in Norway. How can we manage to grow the sport in a way that makes it interesting? Maybe that’s in the future.” (Athlete, 16 Jun 2021)
