He decided to take up wheelchair rugby after watching the Victoria state team training in Australia shortly after his accident. "When I saw it, I knew that I wanted to be part of it, and I was just fortunate I was able to get into it. I played all the sports before, cricket and basketball, and I wasn't elite but I loved to throw my physical weight around. I went back home for 18 months and said to myself I was going to try and get back as much function and independence as I could. I got into an independent state, moved to Melbourne and got involved in rugby." (austin.org.au, 03 Aug 2021; standard.net.au, 04 Nov 2016)
