Czech Republic - Profile
General Interest
Athletes from the Czech Republic won two gold medals on the NPC's Paralympic debut at the 1996 Games in Atlanta. There was a remarkable improvement over the next two editions of the Games, with Czech competitors earning 15 gold medals at Sydney 2000 and 16 four years later at Athens 2004. Performances have not reached the same levels since then, and the Czech Republic won only one gold medal in both London and Rio de Janeiro.
One of the NPC's most successful Paralympians is cyclist Jiri Jezek, who has claimed six gold, four silver and one bronze over his career, and won at least one gold medal at each Games between 2000 and 2012. The 2016 Games in Rio de Janeiro were the first in which Jezek competed but did not finish on the podium.
Swimmer Arnost Petracek was the Czech Republic's sole gold medallist at Rio 2016, winning the men's S4 50m backstroke. Another swimmer, Bela Trebinova, won one silver and one bronze medal in 2016 to take her career total at the Paralympic Games to seven. Her haul includes three gold medals across backstroke and breaststroke events at the Games in 2004 and 2008.
