France made their Olympic debut at the 2016 Games in Rio, and secured their place in Tokyo as one of nine teams to qualify via the 2020 World Olympic Qualification Tournament in Gondomar, Portugal.

In 2016 in Rio, the French team were eliminated after a tight first round loss to Great Britain. They led 2-1 after the doubles contest, but the British team bounced back to win 3-2 to send France home.

On the world stage France won several medals in the mid-20th century, but have rarely contended for medals in recent years. At the 2018 World Championships in Halmstad, Sweden, they were unable to progress into the main knockout round. However, at the previous edition in 2016 they reached the quarterfinals, which was their best performance at the tournament since 2006. They won world championship silver in 1997.

France have fared better at continental level, claiming silver at the inaugural European Games in 2015 behind Portugal. They reached the European championship semifinals in 2015, 2017 and 2019, losing to Germany on two of those occasions.
