"[In swimming] I've gotta do everything right. That's what swimming is. You have to hit the dive, hit the breakout, have your proper stroke technique into the turn. You have to do your best. For me swimming is just doing everything right. It's not about best times. It's not about racing people. It's like making the race as fast as you can." (cnc.ca, 17 Jul 2019)

LATE CALL-UP LEADS TO NATIONAL RECORD
At the 2019 World Championships in Gwangju, Republic of Korea, he was called up to compete in the 200m backstroke semifinals at the last minute after Chinese swimmer Xu Jiayu pulled out of the event. He swam 1:56.96 in the semifinal, breaking the previous Canadian national record of 1:57.34, and went on to finish eighth in the final. "I was in the shower and I got a text that was like, 'Come to the pool, someone scratched! You're in the [semifinal]!' It was kind of random how it all happened. I hadn't made a final that meet yet. It was another chance. I took it and it worked. I wasn't even thinking about the [national] record. I wasn't even supposed to be there so I had nothing to lose and went for it. I guess it comes down to professionalism and already having a set routine so that when I'm in that situation I know exactly what to do and I'm not freaking out." (delta-optimist.com, 15 Dec 2019; cbc.ca, 25 Jul 2019)

FINDING BALANCE
In 2018 he made some lifestyle changes that he hoped would improve his work-life balance between swimming, study and friends. In 2019 he said those lifestyle changes were the source of his success. "[In 2018] I made some good changes to get a better focus in the water and better communication with my coach about what I need. [In 2019] I continued that and refined it. It's kind of like I figured out what I needed to do. The balance between life outside the pool is really helpful as well." (delta-optimist.com, 25 Jul 2019)
