General Interest

General
Canada arrive in Tokyo as bronze medal winners from the 2016 Olympic Games, and ensured they would get another shot at Olympic glory as one of the four teams to qualify for Tokyo 2020 through the 2018/19 World Series.

At the 2016 Games in Rio, Canada lost out in the semifinals 17-5 to eventual champions Australia, with their only other defeat coming in the pool phase to Great Britain. On that occasion the British side were dominant in a 22-0 thrashing, but the Canadians turned the tables in the bronze medal match, reaching the podium with a 33-10 triumph over Great Britain.

Canada finished third in the 2019/20 World Series, which was cut short due to the COVID-19 pandemic. They were runners-up behind New Zealand at three of the five legs, and finished the series equal on points with Australia, but the Australians clinched second place due to a greater point differential over the campaign. The Canadians have ranked in the top three in seven of the eight World Series seasons since the competition began in 2012, with their best overall result a second-place finish in 2014/15.

The Canadian team reached the quarterfinals at the 2018 World Cup in San Francisco, where they were defeated 24-19 by France before going on to secure seventh place via the ranking matches. In 2013 Canada were beaten World Cup finalists against New Zealand, their best performance in three appearances at the tournament since 2009.

The Canadians won consecutive titles at the Pan American Games in 2015 and 2019, beating the United States of America in the gold medal match on both occasions.
