General Interest

General
Great Britain arrive in Tokyo as the reigning Olympic silver medallists. They qualified for the 2020 Games courtesy of England's victory at the 2019 European Olympic Qualifying Tournament in Colomiers, France. In a repeat of the qualification process for Rio 2016, the Rugby Football Union [RFU], the Scottish Rugby Union [SRU] and the Welsh Rugby Union [WRU] all agreed that England would be the lead nation and their results would be considered for Olympic qualification.

At Rio 2016, the British team came through the pool phase with wins over Kenya, Japan and New Zealand. A dramatic quarterfinal saw opponents Argentina miss a stoppage time penalty with the score at 0-0, before Great Britain clinched the victory in sudden death. Another tight match followed in the semifinals, where they trailed South Africa 5-0 at half-time before scoring seven unanswered points in the second half to progress to the gold medal match against Fiji. The Fijians were ultimately too strong in the final, running out 43-7 victors.

In the curtailed 2019/20 World Series, England finished fifth, Scotland 11th and Wales 15th. England have been World Series runners-up four times, most recently in the 2016/17 edition. In December 2020 it was announced that for the first time, men's and women's sides comprising of English, Scottish and Welsh players would represent Great Britain in the World Series in 2021.

England were runners-up behind New Zealand at the World Cup in both 2013 and 2018, and won the inaugural edition in 1993, while Wales claimed the World Cup title in 2009.
