He began playing rugby union [15-a-side] at age eight at his local club in Ayr, Scotland. (rugbypass.com, 08 Dec 2020; Scotland Rugby YouTube channel, 18 Feb 2019)
:
"I went down to the club through friends at school, got dragged along to try it out one day and didn't look back from there. I didn't fall in love with it straight away. I wasn't keen on the contact [tackling], but the more I got used to it the more I enjoyed it and started enjoying the contact side of it." (Scotland Rugby YouTube channel, 18 Feb 2019)
:
To compete at the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo. (rugbypass.com, 08 Dec 2020)
:
"There are differences and similarities [between rugby sevens and rugby union]. Rugby is rugby at the end of the day, you have to have a certain skill set to play the game, passing, tackling, decision making. But the two games are different. With seven players there is always going to be space but everyone on the pitch is quick and can cover you. The biggest difference is the amount of running and the physicality." (Scotland Rugby YouTube channel, 18 Feb 2019)
:
He was named Scotland's Rookie of the Year for the 2017/18 season. (LinkedIn profile, 26 Feb 2021)

He received the Impact Player award for his performances at the 2018 Paris Sevens tournament. (world.rugby, 12 Jun 2018)

CANCER DIAGNOSIS
At age 20 he was diagnosed with Hodgkin's Lymphoma, a rare type of cancer. He underwent chemotherapy treatment and returned to rugby seven months later. "It's part of my journey. I do find it useful when you end up in some dark places, especially in sevens, you lose three games in the last minute, your body is smashed all over the place and you know you have to get up at 06:00 the next day and do it all over again. Think of where I have been, I could be strapped to a chair getting chemo for five hours, being sick. It's a bit of a reality check. Enjoy it and get on with it. I don't think I'd be where I am if what happened hadn't happened. It puts things into perspective, rugby is not the end of the world but it's a great opportunity to have, and I knew when I got back fit that I wanted to give it everything I had to try and go as far as possible. I'm pleased it happened and it is part of where I'm going in rugby." (rugbypass.com, 08 Dec 2020; Scotland Rugby YouTube channel, 18 Feb 2019)
