"My dad took me along to our local rugby club and I got involved in a session. I played all sports growing up and going through school, and played a lot of football. I had to make a decision on whether I was going to pursue rugby or football. For a while I chose football and then the rugby got more serious, so I switched back. I can't say I regret the decision." "An average training day will consist of a morning session of rugby, so we'll be out on the field doing technical or tactical rugby work, and at least two sessions out of four in a week will be high intensity, replicating a game environment. Then, the other half of the day, after the rugby, will be strength and conditioning focused, so it will be in the gym doing strength and power work." (rsng.com, 01 Mar 2019)

Winning the 2015 Tokyo Sevens tournament. "That was just a brilliant feeling of the culmination of a lot of hard work up to that point, along with the gratification of getting my first tournament win in an England shirt, which was pretty amazing." (rsng.com, 01 Mar 2019)

General Interest

General
LEADERSHIP STYLE
He captained the Great Britain rugby sevens team at the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, and has captained the England rugby sevens team at the World Series since 2013. "I would say that one of the key things [being captain] has taught me is about the importance of the individuals, so how individual needs make up the team, and how best to meet those needs with all the challenges that go on. Especially in sevens, you're faced with so many different scenarios, being in different countries, in different environments. Being adaptable, being able to deliver on the move with all those unknowns presented to you is the challenge of leadership." (rsng.com, 01 Mar 2019; teamgb.com, 01 Sep 2016)

SEVENS DEBUT
He made his debut for the England rugby sevens team in 2012 against the Cook Islands in Wellington, New Zealand. "I have a very clear memory of my first rugby sevens match. I remember feeling a bit sick in the canteen before my first training session. I didn't really know what to expect because I'd only ever seen it on TV and there were some big names around me. I played my first tournament in Wellington in 2012 and made my debut against Cook Islands. I scored my first try with my first touch in my first match. It was a pretty nice way to start." (olympic.org, 30 Apr 2019)

OTHER STUDIES
He has also studied at Oxford University in England. (rfu.com, 12 Jul 2013)
