General Interest

Nickname
The Kookaburras

General
Australia are nine-time medallists at the Olympic Games, with their only gold medal coming at Athens 2004. The team's medal haul [one gold, three silver, five bronze] includes six consecutive podium finishes between 1992 and 2012, but at Rio 2016 they were eliminated in the quarterfinals by the Netherlands. That resulted in an equal-lowest ranking of sixth at the Olympic Games for the Australians, and was the first time in 28 years they had failed to win a medal.

The Kookaburras have dominated the World Cup in recent years, appearing in four finals in a row between 2002 and 2014. They faced Germany in the championship match in 2002, 2006, and 2010, losing the first two before securing a 2-1 victory over their European rivals in 2010. At the 2014 World Cup in The Hague, the Australian team thrashed their Dutch hosts 6-1 in the final to claim back-to-back titles at the tournament for the first time. They missed out on the final in 2018, though, losing to the Netherlands on penalties in the semifinals before beating England 8-1 in the third place match.

Australia have been among the most successful nations in the Champions Trophy, winning a total of 15 titles since 1978 and seven out of the eight tournaments that took place between 2008 and 2018. The team also claimed the inaugural Pro League title in 2019.

Australia qualified for Tokyo 2020 after claiming victory over New Zealand at the 2019 Oceania Cup, their 11th straight win in the competition.
