General Interest

General
Spain claimed their place at Tokyo 2020 through the Women's Olympic Qualification Tournaments held in March 2021. Contesting Tournament 1 of the event, which took place in the Spanish city of Lliria, the home team booked their ticket to Tokyo along with Sweden with both sides beating Argentina and then battling to a draw in the final game. With the same record as Sweden, Spain qualified top based on their superior goal difference.

Spain are competing at the Olympic Games for the fifth time in Tokyo. They made their debut as hosts in 1992, and qualified in their own right in 2004, 2012, and 2016. Their best result is a bronze medal, which they won in London. Spain reached the quarterfinals at Rio 2016 after recording three wins and two losses in the group stage. Eventual silver medallists France proved too much in the knockout phase, however, beating them 27-26 in overtime.

The Spanish team secured their best result at the world championship in 2019 by finishing as runners-up. They went unbeaten in the preliminary phase before taking a win, a draw, and a loss in the main round. They handed perennial contenders Norway a 28-22 defeat in the semifinal but were pipped by one goal in the gold medal match by the Netherlands. The result was only Spain's second top-three finish at the world championship, following a third at the 2011 edition of the tournament.

At continental level, Spain won silver medals at the European championship in 2008 and 2014. The team were ranked ninth out of 16 teams at the 2020 European Championship in Denmark.
