General
The Netherlands secured a spot at their first Olympic Games by finishing as runners-up at the 2019 Women's World Cup in France. The Dutch team topped their group with three wins and went on to beat Japan, Italy, and Sweden in the knockout stages. A winning goal in extra-time of the semifinal by Jackie Groenen set up a final against the United States of America, where they were beaten by two second half goals. Their only other appearance at the Women's World Cup came four years earlier, when they were knocked out by Japan in the round of 16.

The Netherlands were European champions for the first time in 2017, when they hosted the tournament. The Dutch team won all three group matches, and then put two past Sweden in the last eight before netting three without reply against England in the semifinals. Facing Denmark in the final, the Dutch fell behind to a sixth-minute penalty but recovered to prevail 4-2.
