General
Romania qualified for the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo through their performance at the 2019 European U21 Championship in Italy and San Marino. They topped their group at the tournament before being eliminated by Germany in the semifinals.

The Romanians have competed at three editions of the Olympic Games. The team made their first appearance at the 1924 Games in Paris, where they were eliminated in the second round following a 6-0 defeat to the Netherlands. At the 1952 Games in Helsinki they were beaten 2-1 by Hungary and knocked out in the preliminary round. Their best result at the Olympic Games came in 1964, where they recorded two wins and one draw in the group stage to advance to the quarterfinals. They again faced Hungary, and exited the competition following a 2-0 defeat.
