General
Argentina qualified for the 2020 Olympic Games by winning the 2020 South American Football Confederation [CONMEBOL] Pre-Olympic Tournament in Colombia.

The Argentinian team have competed at eight editions of the Olympic Games, and are two-time gold medallists. They won their first gold medal at the 2004 Games in Athens, beating Paraguay 1-0 in the final, and secured their second four years later in Beijing with another 1-0 victory in the final, this time against Nigeria. Argentina made their first Olympic appearance at the 1928 Games in Amsterdam, where they lost the final in a replay against Uruguay. They were also losing finalists at the 1996 Games in Atlanta, where Nigeria scored in the 90th minute to win 3-2.

Argentina did not reach the knockout stages at the 2016 Games in Rio de Janeiro. Opening up their group matches with defeat to Portugal, they beat Algeria in their next game to set up a must-win tie against Honduras. The match finished in a draw, which meant the Hondurans went through. The Argentinians were eventually ranked 11th, which is their lowest placing at the Olympic Games.
