In 2021, he took a semester of leave from his nutritional science studies in order to focus on the 2020 OG.

In September 2017, Hurricane Irma claimed the life of his coach Xavier SAMUELS. He has a tattoo with Xavier's favourite phrase, which was 'guidance'. 'Every day I look at it and it acts as extra motivation.'
First-time Olympian. Finished 2nd at 2021 Ready Steady Tokyo Continental Tour event. When he was a high school student, his father Junichi YAMAUCHI, who has served as a high school athletics coach in Japan, made him complete four sets of 80 metre shuttle runs in knee-deep snow as part of his training for the 400m hurdles.
First OG. Bronze at 2021 NCh, 5th in 2019, 2018, 9th in 2015, 12th in 2017, 14th in 2016. One Diamond League event in 2021 for 8th in Doha. In 2019, he moved from Illinois, USA, 1100km to North Carolina, USA, to stick with his coach Andrew WHEATLEY and run at the UNC Track Club.
