He began running at age eight in Ulsteinvik, Norway. (trackandfieldnews.com, 23 Dec 2019)
:
"I was actually visiting the city centre [of Ulsteinvik, Norway]. Then a friend of mine, he was in the track and field club, came and said, 'You need to join this race'. I was there in my jeans and this t-shirt that was way too big for me. I joined the race and I won, I think it was a 200m race, just around a county building. That was when I started and after that I was always going to practices, I was always there and had all my friends in the track and field environment." (trackandfieldnews.com, 23 Dec 2019)

He prefers to run in lane seven. "It's actually just because my coach, who is really careful, wanted me to run very far out of the bend because there is less impact on the body as the bend is wider. It's also because he wants me to have a long career and try not to get injured. But of course, in championships you have got to run on the lane that you get and that is not a problem for me, but if I get to choose, I will always have lane seven. It has become a thing that I'm comfortable with." (olympicchannel.com, 20 Aug 2020)
:
"What people see is who crosses the finish line first. But for me it's like I'm always becoming better, always running faster times. Always do better, that is the thing that I probably value the most." (trackandfieldnews.com, 23 Dec 2019)

In 2019 he was named Male Athlete of the Year by both the European Athletic Association and the Track and Field News [T&FN] website. (trackandfieldnews.com, 23 Dec 2019; friidrett.no, 26 Oct 2019)

CHANGE OF DISCIPLINE
In 2015 he moved to Oslo, Norway, to train with coach Leif Olav Alnes and focus on competing in sprint and hurdles events. He had previously trained as a multi-event athlete under coach Arve Hatloy. "Multi-eventing was actually a solution for me so I didn't have to choose events. I ended up doing the octathlon, it worked perfect for me. Then I went to do decathlon, it was terrible for me. There was a lot of work that needed to be done, I tried to do that, but then there was a suggestion to do the 400m hurdles, and I actually never really looked back. Coach Leif said, 'If you want to reach the Olympics you should be in another event because the decathlon will take too long'. I agreed on that."
