In September 2017 he contemplated retiring from athletics after Hurricane Irma struck the Virgin Islands, British, which claimed the life of his coach Xavier Samuels. In late 2017 he was persuaded to continue and relocated to Clemson University in South Carolina, United States of America, to work with coach Lennox Graham. "After the hurricane hit I said I didn't want to continue track because I really have very little motivation left. With the hurricane, the loss of my coach, moving to a new coach, changing to a new programme, adapting to a new life it's been a hard six months for me. But the people of the British Virgin Islands are my motivation, and after I won gold at the [2018] Commonwealth Games, I sat down and cried for my former coach Xavier. I have a tattoo on my inner arm that says Xavier's favourite phrase, which was 'guidance'. Every day I look at it and it acts as extra motivation."
