General Interest

General
Belgium are making their third Olympic appearance in Tokyo, and their first since the 1980 Games. They finished seventh after reaching the final in Moscow, which was an improvement on their performance four years earlier when they were ranked last out of the 10 teams that posted an official result at Montreal 1976.

The team made their world championship debut in 2019 and secured qualification for Tokyo by reaching the final, where they finished fifth. Earlier in the year they had also competed at the World Relays for the first time, ranking 10th in Yokohama.

Belgium's fourth-place finish at the 2018 European Championships in Berlin was their best performance in three appearances at the tournament between 2010 and 2018. They missed out on the podium by 0.29s as the British team claimed bronze.
