General Interest

General
The Australian women's 4x400m team qualified for Tokyo through the world rankings, and are taking part in their eighth Olympic Games.

Their best Olympic result remains a fourth-place finish at the 1976 Games in Montreal. Since then, the closest they have come to that result is a fifth-place finish as hosts of the 2000 Games in Sydney, where the team featured 400m gold medallist Cathy Freeman.

After the 2000 Games, the Australian team would have to wait until 2016 before their next Olympic appearance. They scraped through the heats in Rio de Janeiro as the eighth-fastest team, and went on to cross the line eighth in the final. They were later promoted to seventh in Rio following the disqualification of Ukraine for an anti-doping violation.

On the world championship stage, Australia have won a single medal, bronze in 1995 with a team that also featured Cathy Freeman. They finished ranked 10th at the two most recent editions of the tournament.

At the Commonwealth Games, Australia claimed three consecutive gold medals from 1998 to 2006, but have not stood on the podium since then.
