General Interest
The first Peruvian Olympian took part in the 1900 Games. Born in London, England, the son of a Peruvian diplomat, Carlos de Candamo competed at the Paris 1900 Games in the fencing competition. He advanced to the quarterfinals of the foil and lost in the first round of the epee. De Candamo went on to become a member of the IOC, but his much more significant place in history was written when he became Peru's signatory on the Treaty of Versailles.
The next Peruvian delegation to attend the Olympic Games did so in 1936 where an all-male team entered athletes in nine sports. It was at the next Olympic Games, in 1948 in London, that a Peruvian athlete won the NOC's first and still only Olympic gold medal.
Edwin Vasquez Cam took the NOC's first gold in the men's 50m pistol event, scoring 545 points in the win, six more than the silver medallist. Since Vasquez Cam's gold, Peruvian athletes have won three silver medals, two in shooting and one in women's volleyball.
The first silver was won by Francisco Boza in trap shooting at the 1984 Games and Juan Giha made it three shooting medals for Peru eight years later when he won silver in the skeet event in Barcelona.
Peru's women's volleyball team finished with the silver medal at the 1988 Games in Seoul. Peru led the final 2-0 against the Soviet Union before eventually losing in five sets.
At the Rio 2016 Games, a 29-person team represented Peru in 11 sports.
