Ireland - Profile
General Interest
Ireland was first recognised as an independent National Olympic Committee in the lead-up to the 1924 Games in Paris. The NOC's first Olympic gold medal came at the 1928 Games in Amsterdam, where Pat O'Callaghan won the men's hammer event with a throw of 51.39m. He successfully defended his title in 1932 in Los Angeles and remains the most successful Irish male athlete at the Olympic Games.
Swimmer Michelle Smith is the only Irish athlete to have bettered O'Callaghan's success. Smith won gold medals in the women's 400m freestyle, 400m individual medley and 200m individual medley at Atlanta 1996, on what was her third Olympic appearance. Smith's efforts made 1996 the most successful Games in terms of gold medals won for the NOC, with Smith claiming all three.
Irish athletes have won more Olympic medals in boxing than in any other sport, securing a total of 16 medals. John McNally was the first to win a medal when he claimed silver in the bantamweight division at the 1952 Games in Helsinki. Michael Carruth, who won the welterweight division at Barcelona 1992, is the only Irish male boxer to have secured Olympic gold, while Katie Taylor is the sole female. Taylor won the women's lightweight category at the 2012 Games in London, which was the first occasion women could compete in Olympic boxing.
Ireland won two silver medals at the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro. Brothers Gary and Paul O'Donovan placed second in rowing's lightweight double sculls event and sailor Annalise Murphy was runner-up in the women's Laser Radial.
