Czech Republic - Profile
General Interest
The Czech Republic first competed at the Olympic Games in 1996 in Atlanta. From 1900 to 1912 athletes from the NOC participated under the banner of Bohemia, while between 1920 and 1992 they represented Czechoslovakia. Some of the most decorated Czech athletes competed during this period. Vera Caslavska won a total of seven gold medals and four silver medals in the women's artistic gymnastics competition at the Olympic Games in 1964 and 1968, and Emil Zatopek claimed gold in the 5000m, 10,000m and marathon at the 1952 Games in Helsinki. He had also secured gold in the 10,000m at the 1948 Games in London.
Javelin thrower Jan Zelezny won Olympic gold medals for both Czechoslovakia and the Czech Republic. He secured his first Olympic gold medal at Barcelona 1992 while representing Czechoslovakia, and then successfully defended his title competing for the Czech Republic in 1996 and 2000. He also won a silver medal at the 1988 Games in Seoul.
Athletes from the Czech Republic won four gold medals on the NOC's Olympic debut at the 1996 Games in Atlanta. Sprint paddler Martin Doktor claimed two gold medals, securing victory in the men's C1 500and C1 1000m, while slalom paddler Stepanka Hilgertova won the women's K1 event. Hilgertova successfully defended her Olympic title four years later at the 2000 Games in Sydney.
Significant recent results include Barbora Spotakova's consecutive gold medals in women's javelin throw in 2008 and 2012, as well as judoka Lucas Krpalek's win in the men's 100kg category at the 2016 Games in Rio de Janeiro. Krpalek's victory was the first time an athlete from the Czech Republic had won a medal of any colour in judo at the Olympic Games.
