"It's really, really tough. It's a sport where you can be one or two points from winning sometimes and it turns out you lose. That's how it is 'beautiful'. It's easy to say that we are learning from this, but from my side it's really tough because those things can be really painful. And for me, to get over the painful losses, it's tough. At the end of the day, I just sometimes want to forget it. But I think that inside it's given me something that I want. The more that I want to get better, I want to work more, I want to fight more. I think that what I've learned is that it doesn't matter if you win or lose. It's always, you know, how you look at it. And that's what I'm trying always to do, even when I win. I always find something that was not really working. And if I lose, I find what was working, even just a little bit." (olympics.com, 06 Dec 2020)

INTRUDER ATTACK
In December 2016 she suffered a hand injury after she was attacked in her apartment in Prostejov, Czech Republic. An intruder posing as a utility man gained access to her home and attacked her with a knife while attempting to burgle the property. "I knew how to fight on the court, but this was the situation when I find out that off the court I'm a fighter, too. Maybe even bigger. So, yeah, it gave me a lot. I mean, the perspective of life as well, the perspective of tennis. I mean, every day when the sun is out, I'm like, 'Wow, that's beautiful'. I love to see my loved ones and my family and my friends. To be playing tennis again, to compete in the biggest stadiums in the world with the greatest competitors, with the crowd clapping for you and the atmosphere. It's something really unbelievable." (olympics.com, 06 Dec 2020; bbc.co.uk, 20 Dec 2016)

DREAM COME TRUE
She won the women's singles title at Wimbledon in 2011 and 2014. She had a dream that she would win her first title in 2011, but in 2021 she explained that the second victory felt extra special. "I had a dream about winning Wimbledon during the French Open that year [2011], and then a couple of weeks later it came true. I couldn't believe it. It was definitely one of the happiest moments of my life. I know in myself, [the victory in 2014] was such a more deeper feeling of happiness, of satisfaction, of like, really, joy. It's really tough to compare those two, of course, but for the second one, it was something a little bit more. When I was 21 and winning my first one, I didn't expect it, didn't think it could happen. And, suddenly it was a surprise and I was like everything's flying, and I didn't really know how to handle it. Three more years, definitely made me more mature."
