General Interest
Distance runner Erika Olivera holds the record for the most Olympic appearances by a Chilean athlete, competing in the women's marathon at five consecutive editions of the Games between 1996 and 2016. Chile's first Olympic medal also came in the marathon when Manuel Plaza secured silver in the men's race at the 1928 Games in Amsterdam. The first Chilean female competitor to stand on the Olympic podium was javelin thrower Marlene Ahrens, who claimed silver in 1956 in Melbourne.
Athletes representing Chile have won two gold medals at the Olympic Games, which both came on the tennis court at the 2004 Games in Athens. Nicolas Massu was involved in both victories, first teaming up with Fernando Gonzalez to secure the 2004 men's doubles title and then beating the United States of America's Mardy Fish in the singles final. Gonzalez won the bronze medal match in the men's singles to give Chile its third tennis medal of the 2004 Games. He went one better in singles at the 2008 Games in Beijing, going down in the men's final to Spain's Rafael Nadal to win silver and claim his third Olympic medal, more than any other Chilean.
Chile did not win a medal at the 2016 Games in Rio de Janeiro, but Barbara Riveros went closest by finishing fifth in the women's triathlon.
