OLYMPIC WINTER GAMES
Competed at the first Olympic women’s ice hockey tournament, as the host nation, at Nagano 1998. Lost all five matches, conceded 45 goals, but scored one goal against Finland and China. Failed to qualify for the next three Olympic Winter Games, finishing second in the Pre-Olympic Qualification Tournament twice (2004, 2008).

Qualified for Sochi 2014 through the qualification tournament, but again failed to win a match, finishing eighth. At PyeongChang 2018, they had losses to Sweden (2-1) and Switzerland (3-1) in the preliminary round, before defeating a unified Korea team (COR) 4-1 and to record Japan's first Olympic victory. Backed it up with an overtime win against Sweden (2-1) in the classification round, before losing 1-0 to Switzerland in the fifth-place playoff. The only goal scored was by Evelina Raselli (SUI), 3:19 into the match.

WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS
Competed in the top division at the world championships seven times, finishing a best of seventh twice (2008, 2015). Finished first in Division IA in 2017, earning promotion for the 2019 World Championships in Espoo. Defeated France (3-0) and Sweden (3-2) in the preliminary round to avoid relegation. Ayaka Toko (JPN) scored the winning goal against Sweden with 75 seconds remaining. Lost 4-0 against the United States in the quarterfinals.

Finished second in pool B at the 2021 World Championships in Calgary, only losing to Czech Republic 4-0. After a 10-2 defeat to the United States in the quarterfinals, Japan bounced back in the classification games with a 3-2 with against Czech Republic, before losing 2-0 to the Russian Olympic Committee in the playoff for fifth.

ASIAN WINTER GAMES
After five straight silver medals, Japan won gold at the 2017 Games in Sapporo. Undefeated, they only conceded one goal (to PR China), and had dominating wins against Hong Kong (46-0) and Thailand (37-0).

QUALIFICATION
Qualified for Beijing 2022 after finishing sixth in qualification seeding, following the cancelled 2020 World Championships in Canada.
