General Interest

OLYMPIC WINTER GAMES
Though they made their first Olympic Winter Games appearance at Garmisch-Partenkirchen 1936, they did not qualify again until Salt Lake City 2002 where they finally recorded their first Olympic win against Austria (4-2).

Their highest finish (8th) came at Sochi 2014, where they reached the quarterfinals by defeating Switzerland 3-1 in the qualification playoffs after failing to win a game in the preliminary round. In the quarterfinal, they lost 2-1 to eventual gold medallists Canada. A late goal by Shea Weber (CAN) in the third period secured victory after goaltender Kristers Gudlevskis (LAT) stopped 55 of 57 shots.

WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS
Competed at the World Championships since 1997 and have hosted the tournament twice (2006, 2021). They finished 11th on home soil in 2021, opening the tournament with a 2-0 win against eventually gold medallists Canada. They secured one more victory against Italy, but suffered three overtime losses, including two in a shootout.

QUALIFICATION
After failing to qualify for PyeongChang 2018 (due to a 3-2 loss to Germany in qualification), won all three games in the Group E Olympic 2022 Qualifying Tournament on home soil in Riga, with a combined goal differential of +16, after 6-0 and 9-0 wins against Italy and Hungary in the opening two matches.

Playing undefeated France in the final match, the Latvians scored early in the first period and extended it to 2-0 in the third period through a goal from Miks Indrasis. France mounted a late push after a goal by Stephane da Costa, but despite being short-handed for the final minutes of the game, Latvia held on and secured qualification by finishing first in Group E.

World Ranking: 10th (2560 pts)
