Team Tirinzoni

General Interest

Switzerland has two Olympic medals from women’s competition – back-to-back silver in 2002 and 2006 – but has finished fourth (twice) and seventh heading into Beijing.

Following that seventh-place finish at PyeongChang 2018, Silvana Tirinzoni added two-time world champion skip Alina Paetz to throw fourth stones. The result has been back-to-back world titles in 2019 and 2021. Swiss women have now won eight gold medals – five in the last seven years – to go with two silver and five bronze.

At European Championships, Switzerland has hauled in 29 medals, six of them gold, with the Paetz/Tirinzoni forces winning silver in 2018 and bronze in 2019.

This season, the Swiss have started slowly with a 24-10 record, good for an 8.06 points per game average versus an average of 6.01 points against. They finished third and fifth at two Grand Slam events in Canada, and scored an additional third and fifth result on the World Curling Tour.

In head-to-head matchups against the Beijing field, Switzerland is 82-75 overall but 39-27 over the past four seasons. They are traditionally strong against Japan (10-2), Denmark (9-2) and ROC (9-2), poor against Canada (5-20 overall and 2-5 since 2018), decent against Korea (8-6 with a recent 3-0) and below-average when facing Great Britain (14-20/4-7). They battle constantly with Sweden, meeting a remarkable 44 times, and are winning their series overall (23-21) but with a 9-11 record in the current Olympic cycle.

Switzerland’s gold at the 2021 World Championships qualified them first for Beijing 2022.

World Ranking: 2nd (66.456 pts)
