Team Shuster

General Interest

The United States men are the defending champions at Beijing 2022.

John Shuster, who was at his fourth consecutive Olympic Winter Games at PyeongChang 2018, started 2-4 and seemed to be headed for another disappointment. But the 2006 bronze medallist went on a run for the ages, winning his next five matches – including a championship victory over Sweden’s Niklas Edin – to capture gold. Three-quarters of his championship squad are back in Beijing, after winning another pair of must-win playoff games at the U.S. Olympic Trials.

The US has a 26-34 record at six Olympic tournaments but has fared better at the World Championships. A 301-261 record has delivered 15 medals—three gold, four silver and eight bronze—with Shuster scoring a third-place finish in 2016. The team was looking strong heading into the playoff round at the 2021 World Championship when a false positive test result for COVID-19 delayed action for a day, and the US lost to Switzerland in their first playoff game.

The result qualified the United States in sixth place for Beijing 2022.

This season, Team Shuster is 22-7 with a scoring average of 8.95 points per game versus an average of 5.48 points against per game. They secured runner-up, third-place and fifth-place finishes on the World Curling Tour.

Shuster is 36-37 lifetime against the field in Beijing, but 27-14 in the current Olympic cylce. He is 3-8 lifetime against Canada but has won both recent meetings, scoring eight points in each match. His 11-12 record against Sweden includes only one win in their last five meetings. Team Shuster have dominated Italy (11-2 lifetime), are 7-2 against China and are 5-2 in recent games against Great Britain.

World Ranking: 4th (65.295 pts)
