Though his father was a curler, he didn’t try the sport until a teacher took him and fellow students to the Chisholm Curling Club in March 1996. The following year he began playing in leagues and bonspiels. (Athlete, 3 Dec 2021)

:

“Delivering a curling stone is so much fun and challenging at the same time. The strategy and tactics of the game have always drawn me in. Not to be overlooked is the community; sitting around a table after a game at the curling club is one of the things I’ve enjoyed from the day I started curling.” (Athlete, 3 Dec 2021)

:

“I’ll enjoy every second of the Olympic experience with my teammates. I’ll walk into the opening ceremony as if it were my first and the closing ceremony as if it will be my last.” (worldcurling.org, 12 January 2022)

General Interest

TUCK SLIDER
Was a tuck slider until 2001. Tuck-sliding is a particular style of delivering the stone which adds additional pressure on the knee of the sliding leg. The style originates from Manitoba, Canada.

MEAN TWEETS
The years following his struggles at Vancouver 2010 and Sochi 2014 were difficult. "People (on social media) were mean. The sport I loved just caused me so much pain and agony." (olympics.com, 22 November 2021)

THE REJECTS
Shuster, Hamilton and Landsteiner were dropped from USA Curling’s high-performance program after a combine in 2014. Shuster continued with the team he named "The Rejects" which famously went on to win gold at PyeongChang 2018.

HOLLYWOOD LIGHTS
The team has made numerous public appearances since PyeongChang 2018, from the White House to The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon, from Late Night with James Cordon to singing show The Voice.

TABLETOP SHOOSTIE
Ambassador Games released a "Team Shuster Gold Medal Tabletop Curling Set" game in the fall of 2018.

DOCUMENTARY
On Jan. 26, NBC’s Peacock streaming platform began releasing episodes of "American Rock Stars", a documentary series on Team Shuster narrated by actor Nick Offerman.

GUILTY FEELINGS
"Honestly, sometimes I start feeling bad that all my trips to the Olympics are blocking other people I care about, who are working really hard towards it too. USA curlers are all close, it’s such a small community." (Athlete, 3 December 2021)

HONOUR THY LEAD
On teammate John Landsteiner: "Having John setting the field of play for the team for a decade has been something I may truly never realize the whole importance behind. Off the ice though too, both as my travel roommate and as, basically, our team manager, I cannot think of a better person to do this whole thing with. I think some of the best-known skips in history have their ‘guy’. Although I feel like I've found three of them on this squad, he’ll probably go down as 'that guy' for me in the history books."
